New Victoria

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Theresa Mae Hogan of New Victoria, age 83, on January 22, 2022, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born on June 17, 1938, in Guysborough, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late James and Ada (Crooks) Simms. Theresa was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many.

Theresa loved Christmas time. She spent weeks decorating, turning their house into a winter wonderland, with numerous trees and brilliant decorations. Family and friends often visited, just to see her beautiful work. She had a natural talent for arts and crafts, as well as painting. In her earlier days, she was an accomplished hunter, and loved to fish. At one time Theresa sang in the choir at St. Joseph’s Church in New Victoria, and in recent years she enjoyed time at the local casino. She was a gifted cook and baker, who kept her family well fed throughout the years. She loved spending time near the ocean, especially Gabarus, and enjoyed nothing more than a good feed of lobsters. Also close to her heart was her affection for her fur babies, most recently Lady and Patches. And just like all the Hogan family, Theresa was a huge fan of the Montreal Canadiens.

Theresa is survived by her children, Teddy (Linda), Fran (Dave Morgan), Sharon (Brian Rideout), Gerald (Shirley), John “Chipper”, Elliott, Courtney, and Amanda (Steven Hodge). Nanny will be dearly missed by her 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Pauline Hogan, Donna Burke, Marjorie Hogan Hillier (Bobby Aucoin), brother-in-law John Pegg, and many nieces and nephews.

Growing up in the Simms family, Theresa had 9 sisters and 7 brothers, 5 of whom have since passed. She was also predeceased by her loving husband Lloyd “Muzzy” in 2016, along with her cherished son Jimmy, in 2005. Theresa and Muzzy made a loving home for their family at “ The Lake “ for 60 years, as husband and wife.

Donations in Theresa’s memory can be made to the Sydney branch of the SPCA.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, June 17 (her birthday) at 10am, in the Parish of Saint Leonard Church, with Father Jim Oliver officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, New Victoria. Following the service, everyone is invited to the Army, Navy, Airforce, on Wilson Avenue, New Waterford, for a reception and social gathering.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave, New Waterford, 902-862-7500.
