It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Sheldon Daniel MacDonald, regret to announce his passing on September 19th, at the new Hospice Palliative Care Society. Sheldon was born in New Waterford on September 20th, 1958, to the late Janette MacDonald and Alex 'Mabou' MacDonald.
Sheldon's favorite pastimes were, working his land in River Ryan nicknamed the 'Channel', traveling the island with his wife Cathy in their campervan, working on classic cars, spending time outdoors with his three children Ryan, Kelly, and Kerri. Most of all he cherished the time he spent with friends and family, especially his lifetime friends Brian 'Lefty' Petrie, Ralph MacNeil, Michael 'Micky' Gardner and Lennie Borden. Sheldon will be remembered by his children for his love of adventures and sharing his knowledge of local history. Every activity spent together was an opportunity for learning.
Sheldon loved to work with his hands and one of his proudest achievements was earning his electrical and Millwright Red Seal tickets. Throughout the years Sheldon worked various jobs beginning with DEVCO Central Shops in Glace Bay and later Prince Mine in Point Aconi. Then on to Tesma in Northside industrial park and later traveling back and forth out West to support his family. Finally, Sheldon worked as an electrician with Marine Atlantic, a job he was most proud of. He sailed with a crew he called his home away from home for over a decade and it's where he met his good friend Steve Woods.
Sheldon was predeceased by his loving wife of 38 years Cathy (née Oliver) MacDonald, mother-in-law Mary Oliver, Father-in-law James 'Nipper' Oliver, brother and sister-in-law Brian and Helen Oliver.
Besides his children, Sheldon is survived by his brother Randy MacDonald, beloved uncle Russell 'Bobo', and his cousins Annette and Marion MacDonald, who were like sisters to him. He is also survived by his brother Randy's children: Breton, Bethany, Brittany (J.R.) and brother-in-law's: Gary (Sheila), J.B. (Alvina), Robbie (Darlene) and Richard (Darlene) Oliver, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A special thank you to the nursing staff and doctors of Membertou Hospice for their love and support and for providing our father with comfort and care. Thank you for helping to guide us through this difficult journey.
