It is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our dearly loved husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather, Raymond ‘Shoulders’ Nearing, on Monday September 12th, 2022 at the New Waterford Hospital.

Born May 2, 1930, in Scotchtown, Ray was the son of the late James and Anne (Gallant) Nearing.

‘Shoulders’ was a proud coal miner of 38 years and loved to talk ‘Pit’ with anyone who would listen and share memories of his time spent underground.

Ray enjoyed summers at the bungalow, in Little Narrows, with his family and a good drink with friends. He was a lover of animals and would go out of his way to ensure they were all well fed.

Ray was predeceased by his loving wife of 66 years, Elsie (Penny) Nearing, brothers; Mick, Charlie, Jimmy, Miles; sisters, Utah and Violet; son-in -laws Leonard Woods, Brian MacDonald, and Harvey Lord.

He is survived by his children Cathy (Gord) Peplinski , Sudbury Ont., Jeanette MacDonald, Scotchtown, Pennie Lord, Sydney, Jeannie (Tim) Broekhuysen, Calgary, Gwen Young, Oromucto, Joe (Carol Ann) Howie Centre, Mary (Jimmie) King Scotchtown, Mark (Lorie) Nearing, Truro; sisters, Jean, Caroline, and Anna; nineteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

A memorial donation may be made in Ray’s honour to the Cape Breton S.P.C.A.

Arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Funeral Home, New Waterford. A visitation will be held Saturday September 17th in McLellan Funeral Home from 11- 1p.m. followed by a chapel service and interment in Union Grove Cemetery, with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating.
