Michael ‘Mickey’ Baker

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of a dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, Mickey Baker, on December 17, 2021, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Mick was born in New Waterford, the only son of the late Fred J. and Brigid (Murphy) Baker, of Victoria Mines.
Mick enjoyed playing sports in his earlier years, particularly hockey (New Victoria Eagles), and baseball with the Colliery soft ball league. He loved fishing and hunting, snowmobiling, skiing, as well as driving his motorcycle.
He worked in the Coal Industry for 42 years before retiring in 1996. He worked in #18, #20, #12, and Lingan Colliery, and before his retirement, he worked at the wash plant lifting bank. Mick was President of C.U.P.E. Local 2046 (Devco Supervisors) and was also and active member of the New Waterford Fish and Game Association.
Mick is survived by his wife Joan, son Russell (Jennifer); daughters Audrey (Sheldon) MacLeod, Lower Sackville, NS, Holly (Ray) LePage, Montreal. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Jenna (Chad) Morgan, Ryan (Jenna Marie) MacLeod, Michelle (Brandon) Baker, Devin and Mitchell LePage; and two great-grandchildren, Avery and Hannah Morgan, who were the joy of his life; as well as his fur Buddy ‘Max’.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be on Monday, December 20 from 6-9 pm. A chapel service will take place on Tuesday, December 21, at 3pm with Father Peter McLeod officiating, followed by a private family interment in Saint Alphonse Cemetery, Low Point. Masks, ID, as well as proof of double vaccination are required.
Donations in Mick’s memory can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
