Leonard was the eldest child of Isabel (Beaton) and the late John Darling. Leonard was a very proud and private gentleman who took great pride within his community. He was an active member with the Knights of Columbus for 40 years. He served for 35 years as a volunteer fire fighter with the New Waterford Volunteer Fire Dept., fulfilling the roles of assistant deputy chief and deputy chief which he took great pride in doing. He was employed at the time of his diagnosis as a maintenance technician with Cape Breton Island Housing Authority. Leonard is survived by his loving wife, Darlene (Hogan), daughter Stephanie (Kristy), Cole Harbour, and his mother Isabel. He is also survived by brothers Greg (Ardith), Jimmy, Angus, Russell, Johnny (Julia), Stephen “Ned” (Donna) and David, sisters Kelly and Tracy, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. He is also survived by several close friends, Ambrose (Amby) Coady, Louie Graham and his special, private nurse Laura Lee MacDonald (Randy). Besides his father, he was predeceased by his sister, Anne, paternal grandparents James and Anne Darling, paternal grandparents Angus Hector and Kathleen Beaton. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 20, 2015 from 6-9 pm.
