John 'Pappy' Steiger

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather, John “Pappy” Steiger on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with his loving wife and family by his side. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late George and Bridget (Williams) Steiger. Pappy had worked in the coal mines for 20 years. He then worked for New Waterford Transportation & Public Works. Pappy’s love for the woods showed as he was an avid hunter, as well as a fisherman. He is survived by his loving wife Diane, daughters Debbie (Joe) Deveaux, Dartmouth , Beverly Steiger, Alberta; son Billy (Cathy), Dartmouth; sister Georgie Woodland, New Waterford; brothers Joey, Sydney, Jimmy (Terry), Ontario, daughter in-law Cheryl, brothers-in-law Jeff MacDougall, Walter (Carol) MacKenzie and Brother Matthys, sisters in-law Cheryl MacKenzie and Elanie (Gordie) Digero, 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Pappy was predeceased by his first wife Betty, son John Wayne, brother Charles, daughter Linda, sisters Verla MacDougall, Shirley Power and Tootsie Matthys, mother in-law Theresa MacKenzie, sister in-law Cleo Steiger, brothers in-law Cyril Power, Herbie Woodland and Eric MacKenzie. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 20 from 2 – 4 to 7 – 9 and a funeral mass will be held on Monday, April 21, 2014 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of Saint Leonard, Mount Carmel Ave, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will take place in Mount Carmel Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the Army, Navy & Air Force, Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500. Donations in Pappy’s memory can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
