John Duncan Macintyre

John Duncan MacIntyre, 83, passed away November 30, 2009 in the compassionate care of the Glace Bay General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. John D. was born March 21, 1926 in Inverness, Cape Breton to Dan Angus MacIntyre and Catherine (Katie MacDonald). John D. came to New Waterford when his father took work in the Number 18 coal mine and where John D. also worked from the ages of 15 to 19. He then spent several years at Schwartz clothing store in New Waterford before his adventurous spirit took him to Toronto where he married Bernadette (Fudge) who was to be his wife and love of 58 years. Four of his eight children were born while working as manager of Agnew Surpass shoe store in Toronto, namely, Danny (Shirley Kelly), Debra (Phil MacDonald), Susan (Bob Horwath) and Scott (Norma MacKinnon). John D. moved back to Cape Breton in 1958 and opened his own high quality women's shoe store in Sydney, the Shoe Mart. After building a two story home in New Waterford, the love of the land and adventure brought him to Lingan where he built a sawmill to carve up Douglas fir timber and fashion a house of his own unique design. It was in New Waterford and Lingan that the 'last four' of his children, Maureen (Michel 'Mick' Boudreau), Mark (Corrine Campbell), D'Arcy (Renita Campbell) and Cathy (Wayne Scheller) were born and where his roots were to be forever established. John D. was truly a renaissance man and visionary; coal miner, log driver, truck driver, pipe fitter, farmer, entrepreneur, cook, boxing promoter, race horse owner, and a co-owner of the New Waterford Jets Junior 'A' hockey team. His love of photography, music, dancing and respect of knowledge and passion for carpentry and all things Cape Breton most clearly defined his life and the lives of his family. He was a loving and caring man who was always willing to share his good fortune and knowledge with others. John D. was a champion of the underdog, did not tolerate arrogance and abuse of authority and always showed respect for others. John was a member of the St. Joseph's Lingan choir; a founding member of the New Waterford Lion's Club and a 4th degree knight in the KOC in New Jersey. In his later years he enjoyed his Florida vacations where he made many caring friends. John D. is survived by his wife, Bernadette (Bernie); his eight children and his great pride and enduring legacy of 25 grandchildren namely, Kelly (Derek) Jerrott, Nicholas (Holly MacLeod) and Holly MacIntyre; Adam and Matthew Macdonald; Jill (Bobby Morrison), Frankie and Kirstie Horwath; Ian, Katie, Heather, Emma and Cassie MacIntyre; Travis, Ashley, Peter, Josephete and Brett Boudreau; Barrott, Sarah and Rebecca MacIntyre; Allie and Jesse MacIntyre; Wyatt and Hope Scheller; and six great-grandchildren, Lennon, Mason and Sadie Jerrott; Adia and Keller MacIntyre and Spencer Morrison. Doug MacIntyre, Archie (Shirley Nemis) and sisters, Mary (Andy Ouelette), Theresa (Ted Black) and Flossie (Rannie Gillis) as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Toronto, Winnipeg, New Jersey and Nova Scotia.
