It is with heavy hearts that we the family announce the sudden passing of John Alex Campbell 85, of Roaches Road on Monday June 29, 2009, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in New Waterford, John Alex was the son of the late Dougall and Elizabeth Ann (Fraser) Campbell. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford. John Alex was a retired miner who worked in numberes 12, 16 and 18 collieries before becoming a domestic coal hauler for New Waterford and surrounding areas for many years. He was widely know as a wheeler dealer and could barter with anyone. He loved raising chickens and other animals. John Alex was an avid horseman having been around horses his whole life from a very young age .He was inducted into the Nova Scotia Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 1989 and his passion continues on in his sons today. John Alex is survived by his loving children, daughters, Jane (John) Harrington, New Campbellton, Anna (Bruce) Clyburn and Ann Marie (Allister) MacLeod, both of Lingan; sons, Danny 'Soupy' (Betty) and Sandy, both of Lingan, Travis ( Edwenna), Gardiner Mines; sisters, Janie Crowley and Betty Campbell, both of Boston, Mass., Olga Wilcox, New Waterford; brothers, Haritgan (Georgie) and Dougie, both of New Waterford; brother-in-law, Charlie MacEachern, Ontario. Also surviving are his 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews and many great friends. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Theresa, his son, Michael, as well as two children in infancy, brother, Ewan, sisters, Mary and Theresa, and brother-in-law, Joe Wilcox. Visitation for John Alex will take place Wednesday, July 1 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500. A funeral Mass celebrating John Alex's life will take place Thursday, July 2 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford, with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. Interment will take place in Mount Carmel Cemetery, a luncheon will be held immediately following the mass in the Knights of Columbus Hall, 3226 Plummer Ave., New Waterford and all are welcomed to attend.
