It is with great sadness that we, the family of James Carpenter announce his passing at the age of 80 years. He passed away peacefully in the palliative care unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, following a very brief illness and surrounded by his loving family. Born in River Ryan, James was the son of the late John and Bridget (Quinn) Carpenter. He was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael's Church, River Ryan. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15, New Waterford. James served in the Korean War from 1950-1952, upon his return he worked in the No. 18, 12 and Lingan collieries until his retirement in 1987. James enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially his many fishing trips to Washabuck. He also enjoyed visiting family and friends and loved to tell stories or a good joke. James is survived by his sister, Evelyn (Jack) Walsh, Bridgewater, N.S.; brothers, Blaine, River Ryan, Bernie (Jean) and Jackie, both of New Waterford. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Mamie and Carmel. There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held Tuesday, Aug. 11 at 10 a.m. in the parish of St. Leonard's, St. Michael's Church, River Ryan, with Fr. Doug Mac Donald officiating. Interment will be at a later date. There will be a luncheon immediatley following the mass at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15 Plummer Avenue, New Waterford. All are welcomed to attend. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500.
