McKinnon, Hilda
New Waterford
It is with so much love and sadness we witnessed the peaceful passing of Hilda MacKinnon (89), our beautiful Mom, Nan, Great Mama, sister, aunt, cousin and friend, on Wednesday September 25, 2019, surrounded by her family and friends, following a brief illness.
In our family home, with teacups in hand and enjoying delicious homemade meals, we journeyed through life with Mom and made beautiful memories. In our family home, guided by her faith, love and peace, we were so blessed to say our heartfelt goodbye as Mom made her journey to heaven and was reunited with Da, the love of her life, and so many other beautiful angels.
Born on August 11, 1930 in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Mary (Wadden) and Gordon McVicar. Hilda dedicated her whole life to her family and was an avid cook and baker. Up until his death in 2006, her husband, Hugh E. MacKinnon, was always by her side enjoying life as their family grew. With their 9 children, they enjoyed family outings such as Sunday picnics, backyard baseball games and outdoor skating. Mom and Dad loved to dance and celebrate every holiday and birthday with a delicious meal and, of course, Mom’s famous chocolate cake with boiled icing was a staple. As our family tree grew larger, our celebrations became bigger and better. They had amazing faith which showed in the way they lived life and obstacles were often solved with a very simple question …“And what can we do to help?”
As a young girl, she was employed at Ike Allen’s Grocery store then following marriage, she was a stay at home mom until later when she went to work at the G.I. Plant and then the Medical Hall Drug Store. Mom was an active member in the community. She enjoyed travelling and lots of outings with family and friends, especially Bingo and the Casino with her best friend and neighbour, Mary Gillis.
Left to mourn are her 9 children, Neil A. (Ernestine), Mary/Dudy (Mickey), Lylie, Tina (Bruce), Millie, Hughie, Donna, Hilda, and Doug (Lisa). Her grandchildren Rachael, Aleisha, Vanessa, Ashley, Samantha, R.J., Melissa, Stephen, Garrett, B.J., Laura, Jeffrey, Allie, Riley, Christine, Mark, Joey, Michelle, and Nancy. Also, her 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Her sisters Lylie (Edward) Burchell, Millie (Lorne) MacQuarrie, and sister-in-law Midge McVicar, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents, Hilda is predeceased by in-laws, Neil A. and Florence MacKinnon, sisters Mildred Graham, Mary Ann (in infancy), brothers Art and Douglas McVicar, sons-in-law, Stevie MacLellan and Francis Noble, grandsons Hugh Douglas and Gordon Keith (in infancy), sisters-in-law, Annabelle MacKinnon, Tina Boudreau, and Afra McVicar, brothers-in-law, Donald MacKinnon and Charles Graham.
Visitation will be held Friday, September 27th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM and funeral mass will take place Saturday, Sept. 28th at 10 AM in the Parish of Saint Leonard, Mt. Carmel Ave., New Waterford with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial in Mount Carmel Cemetery followed by a luncheon in the parish Hall, Convent St. and all are welcome. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford 902-862
We would like to thank everyone who cared for mom during her illness especially the VON and palliative nurses. In lieu of flowers, donations in Hilda’s memory can be made to the Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or charity of one’s choice. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of McLellan Brother’s Funeral Home.
