Harvey William Gillard
It is with deep sadness that we, the family of Harvey William Gillard, announce his passing on January 2, 2022, at home. He led a courageous, but brief, battle with cancer. Born in Glace Bay, on March 24, 1940, he was the son of the late Lancelot Garfield and Bessie Rhoda (Butts) Gillard, both of Newfoundland.
Except for a short time in Toronto, Harvey spent his entire life in Cape Breton and the last 40 years or so in Catalone Gut. He enjoyed his home and the beautiful view of the ocean. Over the years, he met many people and made many friendships, and would often stop by for a cup of coffee, tea, or a chat. He could be seen taking his daily drives though the neighbourhood, seeing what was fresh. He loved to attend may local bingos where he often shouted after his win “ How sweet it is “.
Harvey is survived by his sisters Joyce (Peeters), Betty Gillard, both of Ont., and Carol Ann Hiscock, Catalone Gut, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins, here in NS, Ont. and Newfoundland, his best friend Sammy Copley, Kitchener, Ont., and his special nephew Harvey Gillard Jr.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters Lillian (Parker), Evanglene (Godfrey), brothers Basil, Lloyd, and Wally.
Funeral service will be on Friday, January 7, 2022, at 11am, at MacMillan United Church in Catalone, with Minister Emily Duggan officiating. Masks, ID, as well as proof of double vaccination are required. Seating is limited for the service, but all are welcome to attend the interment in Loch End Cemetery, which will take place immediately after the service. Family flowers only.
