George 'Rick' Howie

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful man, George Frederick Howie, on February 2, 2020 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Rick was born on October 7, 1948, the son of the late Alex and Mary (Spracklin) Howie.

As a young boy, teenager and adult, you could always find Rick on a ballfield wherever he lived. His passion for baseball took him to many professional games in many stadiums, and World Series games in Canada and the United States. Rick also excelled in Broomball and Hockey. After leaving Glace Bay he resided in Ontario for 40 years, returning to Cape Breton in 2013. In Cape Breton he was a very proud coal miner and in Ontario he worked for Canada Post as a letter carrier.

Rick is survived by his loving wife Alvina, children; Sandra(Gerald) Aucoin, George (Jaime) Howie, Michelle (Kyle) Howie, Brenda Lee (Bryce) Howie, Grandchildren; Cory, Robyn, Ashleen, Mairi, Cody, Bailey, Amberly, Rachelle, Brittany, Kris, Justus, Great-granddaughter Isabella, Brothers; John (Karen), Marv (Ann), Ron (Fran), Sisters; Mary D Gillies, Donna, Brenda, Extended family; Basil, Kim (Donnie), Allana (Robert), Raylene, and Granddaughter Ruby.

Rick played a big part in the lives of three very special people, Nephews; Richard and Ronald; Niece Anne.

Besides his loving parents, Rick was pre-deceased by his beautiful daughter Elizabeth, Brothers; Dick and Henry, Sister; Betty, Brother-in-law; Robert Gillies.

There will be no visitation. A Chapel Service will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2020 at 2pm, with Reverend Duncan Roach officiating, followed by a luncheon at Saint Leonard’s Parish Hall on Convent Street, New Waterford.

As an expression of sympathy for Rick, donations can be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Cancer Center.

Rick had a favorite saying, which when he wrote something, he always ended with “ STAY BLESSED, GOD IS GOOD “.
