New Waterford / Donkin

Eli Poirier

It is with great sadness that the family of Eli Poirier announces his peaceful passing on September 1st, 2023, at Seaview Manor, Glace Bay, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Cheticamp and raised in Inverness, the son of the late Moise and Katie Mae (Catherine Deveau) Poirier.

Eli is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Theresa (Deveaux). Making New Waterford their home, they raised five children: Mary (Kent) of Donkin; Charlie (Shirley) of New Waterford; Joseph (Tena) of Lower Sackville; Moise (Sharon) of Sydney; and John-Paul of New Victoria. Also left to mourn are his sister, Anne Poirier of Inverness, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Eli was like a father to his three granddaughters, Katie, Faustina, and Ceileigh, who will miss him dearly. He will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity. Eli always loved to be surrounded by friends and family. He had a love for music; you would walk in to find him picking at the instruments or recording a tune to later learn by ear from the radio.

Eli was a coal miner and later worked in construction. He loved vacationing at Lake Ainslie, where he would go fishing or gather around a fire for an evening of music and laughter. Eli loved a hand of cards, whether it be a poker night or forty-fives with family and friends.

Eli spent his last few years living in Donkin with his daughter and family until his health declined and he moved to Seaview Manor for the last eight months. He loved going for his daily drives with his chauffeurs, Katie and Mary, all over the island, even if it was just down the road for a hot beverage.

Eli was predeceased by his brother Paul Poirier and his sisters Veronica Colburn, Margaret Finn, and Mary Ann White.

We would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Seaview Manor. They are like a second family to us and continue to care for our dear mother. We will always be grateful for the compassion and support given during his stay. We would also like to thank Rev. Norman MacPhee for his kind words and prayers at his passing.

The family will receive relatives and friends at McLellan Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave, New Waterford, on Wednesday, September 6, from 11 a.m. up until the start of the service at 1 p.m. with Fr.
