On November 6, 2023, Edward Charles Deruelle (87) of Sydney, Nova Scotia passed away with peace in his heart at Hospice Cape Breton.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years Evangeline (Boudreau); his son Edward Angus Deruelle (Maryann), step-daughters Natalie Fullerton (Steven), Leslie Fraser (Brian), and Francine Deschepper (Josh MacDonald), grandchildren Dayna Deruelle (Nicole), Carla McClung (Brent), Erin Vanderkooy, Derek Vanderkooy (Dana), James Fraser, Alex Fraser, and his five great-grandchildren Rileigh, Kade, Arlo, Elowen, and Declan.

Edward is also survived by his sister Louise MacKinnon, and the mother of his children Mary MacNeil (Ron). Edward was predeceased by his daughter Heather Goudreau (Peter), his sisters Bertha McIntyre and Helen Keating, and his four brothers Gus, Raymond, George, and Henry Deruelle.

Edward was born in 1936 to Augustus and Raymonde Clair Deruelle of Scotchtown, New Waterford. He traveled much of his life across Canada, living in Montreal, Toronto, and Kelowna, before moving back to his beloved Cape Breton Island. As a veteran, Edward was an engaged member of the Royal Canadian Legion for over 50 years, and looked forward to reading his Legion Magazine with enthusiasm.

Edward enjoyed his retirement years, spending winters in Florida, and Summers in Cheticamp, where he leaves behind many friends. Edward loved time spent with his neighbours in Sydney, bike-riding, and listening to all sorts of music, especially Celtic music, and the French accordion music he grew up listening to with his family. Always active, he was a beautiful dancer, a talented gardener, and a very handy builder. We will remember him fondly, happily immersed in a do-it-yourself project.

Edwards life will be honored in a Funeral Mass on November 10th , 2023. The service will be held at St. Margauerite Bourgeoys Parish located at 40 Cabot St. Sydney, Nova Scotia. Starting at 11:00 AM with Fr. Bill Burke officiating, friends and family are welcome to come together for a time of fellowship following the service for a luncheon at the Church. A private family interment will take place  in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Bridgeport following the luncheon.   If you so wish donations in Edward's memory may be made to Cape Breton Hospice Society.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the care and directions of McLellan Funeral Home 3188 Plummer Ave, New Waterford.  You may express words of comfort and condolence to the family by signing the guestbook below.

  THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside still waters;
He restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for His name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil;
for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff—
they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
my whole life long.
