Dora Smith

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved ma, nana, sister, aunt, and friend.

Dora Smith passed away peacefully on Thursday September 29, 2022, at the Cape Breton Regional hospital surrounded by her family.

Born in New Waterford on April 7, 1940, Dora was the daughter of the late Samuel and Christina (Fitzharris) Newman. She is survived by her loving son and caregiver – Samuel, daughter – Roberta (Frances) Gillis, and son – Myles (Beverly). She is also survived by her four grandchildren – Matthew (Myrrhissa), Jessica (Tyler Wheeliker) Gillis, Hannah and Madeleine Smith. Lastly, Dora is survived by her baby brother – Samuel (Geannie) Newman Jr., brother-in-law – John Woodburn (Margarite) and sister-in-law – Catherine Smith, niece – Irene (Robert) Lever, nephew Samuel (Michelle) Newman III, and her grand niece Louise Lever whom she loved like another grandchild and of course, many friends.

Dora was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband Robert (Dick) Smith, sister Louise Woodburn and her special brother-in-law – Richard (Duz) Smith.

Dora worked for 25 years in the housekeeping department of the New Waterford Consolidated hospital – the cleanest hospital in Canada! Dora lover her work and loved the friends she made at work even more. Dora also enjoyed her time as a member of the ladies auxiliary of the Scotchtown Volunteer Fire Dept where again she enjoyed many friendships.

Dora loved her soaps on television, music, and spending time with her family. She also loved being outside and enjoying the sounds and sights of nature.

Though her health has been failing over the past few years, Dora faced it all with a strong heart and ever-present smile. Everyone Dora met loved her for the peaceful, gentle soul that she was. Dora is now in heaven with her Robert and her other family members and friends. Heaven will be and even cleaner and tidier and peaceful place as a result.

We will forever keep Dora in our hearts, will treasure our memories, and will always love her.

Lastly, we would like to thank the healthcare providers at CBRH ER, IMCU, CCU, and the 4A staff including Danielle Tighe, Jessica Spooney, Brialee Tighe, and Tonya Costigan Covey.

If you so wish, donations may be made in Dora’s honor to the Cape Breton S.P.C.A.
