With sadness and fond memories we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle on Nov. 28, 2011 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family. Born April 13, 1928 in New Waterford, he was the son of the late George and Joan (Walters) Little. He was a volunteer member of the Dominion Fire Department, serving the community for many years and an Honorary member from 1970-present. He was the Commanding Officer of Angus L. MacDonald Air Cadets Squadron 623 in Dominion, a dedicated member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Dominion and a member of Branch 78 Legion, Dominion. At age 15 he began his career with the Dominion Coal Company in #16 colliery, New Waterford. He enlisted in the Canadian Army and served between 1944 and 1946, returning home to continue his career with Dominion Coal Company/Devco until his retirement as Mine Safety Supervisor in 1988. He was a kind, loving, gentle man who always put his family first. His favorite times were at family gatherings and celebrations. He took pride in everything he did, especially in his yard and gardens. Survived by his wife, Viola (Eldridge); children, Joanne (George) MacDonald, Glace Bay, David (Sharon) Little, Dwight (Francine) Little, both of Dominion, Cathy Hawley, New Waterford, Scott (Cheryl) Little, Slave Lake, Alta., Karen MacKinnon, New Waterford; stepchildren, Brian (Jeanette) MacDonald, New Waterford, Madeline (Ronnie) Gillis, New Brunswick, Ann (Stevie) MacNeil, Ont.; sisters, Joanne Moroz, Ont., Divina (Victor) Hrushka, Ont.; son-in-law, Donnie MacKenzie, Mira; grandchildren, Alyson, Daniel, Kristen, David, Sandra, Tanya, Tara, Michelle, Aimee, Jacqueline, Brittany, Jason, Mitchell, Jonathan, Shelby, John Michael, Raylene, Joey, Aaron, Cheryl, Natalie, Shauna, Stevie, Trevor; great-grandchildren, Daniel, Alexis, Ande, Emily, Kendra, Ryan, Zacharia, Felicia, Kinsey, Marshall, Baily, Cody, Hanna, Heather, Jackson and Jaycee. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Alda Andrews; daughter, Sharon MacKenzie; sons-in-law, Greg Hawley and Michael Cull; sisters, Margaret Bildfell, May Wagoman; brothers, William and George (Rudy). Visitation will be held Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500 and a celebration of David’s life will take place Friday, Dec. 2, 2011 at 2 p.m. in the Church of the Good Shepherd, Dominion with Rev. Judi Phillips officiating and interment immediately following at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens and followed by a reception at the Dominion Fire Hall. Thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital ICU for their excellent care and compassion during his stay.
