Collins Douglas Maclellan

Collins Douglas MacLellan, 75 New Waterford – We regret to announce the sad passing of Collins MacLellan a kind and caring son, brother and uncle. Collins passed peacefully with family by his side at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Jan. 16th, 2023.The son of Margaret and Rannie MacLellan of Warren Ave. New Waterford and brother of Joseph (Fran), Donnie (Eleanor), Colonel (Jackie), Archie, Hugh Allan, and Ronalda Lovegrove (Martin). He leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom he challenged at countless games of basketball, Tarabish and Crazy Eights over the years, a rite of passage he would also share with a growing number of grand nieces and nephews.

Born in Margaree in 1947, Collins was a lifelong resident of Warren Ave. and constant support for his mother Margaret, beloved by her and his siblings. Collins had many friends throughout New Waterford and was a volunteer with the Knights of Columbus (KOC) and coached several minor youth basketball teams. He was inducted into the New Waterford Sport Hall of Fame with his brothers for playing on Provincial basketball championship teams including Mount Carmel School and the Strands. He was a keen follower of competitive sports and an avid Toronto Maple Leafs and Red Sox fan. Collins worked with the Iron Workers Union travelling throughout Ontario, Baffin Island and Nova Scotia, he retired from the NSLC in New Waterford.

He was predeceased by his father Ronald (Rannie) MacLellan and siblings Alexander (Sandy), Angus (in infancy) and Aurelia Maclellan.

 Special thanks to the New Waterford Homecare Workers, the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) and the staff at Alderwood Rest Home and the ICU at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Collins will be kindly remembered and missed by family and many close friends. 

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of McLellan Funeral Home 3183, Plummer Ave, New Waterford, NS. 

A funeral mass will be held in the Parish of Saint Leonard Church, Mount Carmel Avenue, on Friday, June 23rd, at 1:30 p.m. with Fr. Godwin Obike officiating. Following the mass, a burial service will take place in  Mt. Carmel Cemetery, New Waterford. A reception will follow at The Knights of Columbus Hall, New Waterford, all are welcome to attend.
