It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our beautiful mother, sister, grandmother and aunt at Alderwood Home in Baddeck on February 20, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. Born in 1935, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Myrtle MacPherson, River Ryan. Mom was a wonderful lady who had many talents. Her homemade bread and sweets were second to none and she made the best cabbage rolls. Besides bringing up her seven children, she was a second mom to many. Our home was filled with love and caring. There was always someone extra at our table and often she made extra sleeping room for our friends or anyone who needed a place to stay where they felt safe. She quietly sent food and gifts to some who were less fortunate than us. She loved all animals and fed them too! She especially liked to watch the birds. She was loving and giving, kind, and compassionate. She was a care giver and a nurturer. She could always see the good in people no matter what. She did not judge, especially young people, she did not care if their hair was purple or green or if they had some piercings or tattoos or listened to “their crazy music”. Mom had a beautiful voice, she loved country music and she was always singing whether washing mega loads of laundry or cooking or cleaning or at a house party with her family and friends for a night of guitars, fiddles, piano and songs. She was a member of the New Victoria church choir for many years. A devoted Christian, mom was a member of the Parish of St Leonard since moving to New Waterford; she did not go anywhere without her prayer beads and when she was no longer well enough to attend Mass, she watched Mass for Shut ins and any other Mass on TV. Her angel niece, Tish, brought her communion every week.
Mom loved her little garden of flowers and even after moving to New Waterford, she would get dad or us to drive her to New Victoria to make sure her flowers were still growing at our family home. At Alderwood they have flowers and shrubs planted all around and she took great joy in watching things grow outside her window there. She would say “look at my beautiful garden”. Mom's grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy; she was always happy to see them when they came to visit. Christmas at mom and dads was an especially noisy joyful time when the whole gang landed at one time.
Chris is survived by daughter Linda (Archie) MacDonald, Gardiner Mines; sons: David (Millie), Vince (Shelly) New Victoria; Brian (Elaine), Stephen (Sheila), Kevin (Judy) New Waterford; Harold-Whitey (Lonna) Cole Harbour, and granddaughter (who she called her second daughter) Tammy (Ben), Sydney; sisters Theresa White (late Greg), Lorraine MacPherson, New Waterford; Carmel Timmons, Ontario, sisters-in-law Norma and Shirley MacPherson, New Waterford. Nanny, Nan will be sadly missed by 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren and extended family members. She loved and was loved by all. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years Edmund (Ted), her brothers: Vince and Joseph MacPherson and her sister Rita MacPherson and infant granddaughter Brittany Ruelland George. She missed them so much. We would like to thank the nurses and care givers at Alderwood for their wonderful care for mom this past year; they truly treated her like family and were so helpful and kind to all of us. We also thank New Waterford Home Care and the VON who helped her and us through some difficult days, family members who lived with, visited, called daily and sat with mom, while in hospital, especially Diane who lived with mom for 2 years before she moved to Alderwood. Mom you took a part of all of our hearts with you.
As per mom's request cremation has taken place. A chapel service will be held in the McLellan Brothers Funeral Chapel 3183 Plummer Avenue, New Waterford on Saturday February 23, 2019 at 1pm, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Interment to take place at a later date.
If you wish, donations may be made to Alderwood Home, Baddeck, St. Vincent de Paul or charity of choice.
