It is with great sadness and love that we, the family announce the passing of Charles MacGillivary, 74, on June 24, 2023 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Charles was born in New Waterford, NS to Angus and Margaret (Gratton) MacGillivary on November 13, 1948. He was married to the love of his life, Helene with whom he spent more than 50 wonderful years. He always said his greatest accomplishment in life, his pride and joy, was his son Scott. He later inherited a daughter-in-law Jennifer who he loved dearly. Charles was a kind, loving, family man with a great sense of humor, a mischievous smile and a love for animals.
Charles worked for Irving Oil for many years performing pump maintenance and ran the Irving gas station on Kings Rd in Sydney. He loved working on cars with his brother Butch and was still diagnosing cars right up until the very end. His most prized possession was his 2007 Pontiac Torrent, which has never seen a snowfall and looks like it just drove out of the showroom. Nothing made Charles happier than sipping on an ice cold Diet Pepsi, while browsing through the latest Princess Auto flyer. He loved fishing in the summer, listening to old time country music and watching a good game of hockey in the winter.
Charles is survived by his wife Helene (Burke), son Scott (Jennifer), niece Michelle (Tony). Brother-in-laws Joey (Linda), Terry (Donna), Maurice (Maureen), Billy (Denise) Burke, Sister-in-laws Anita (Michael) Burke, Mary (Stan) Clark, Mary Burke and many nieces and nephews.
Charles was predeceased by his parents, Angus and Margaret, brother John “Butch”, parent-in-laws Susie and Sylvester, and brother-in-law Dennis Burke.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the care team at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the kindness and care shown to Charles during his stay, to the VON who have been a great support over the years, and the amazing friends and neighbours who have always been there. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of Charles to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Diabetes Canada.
A Chapel Service will be held for Charles on Friday July 21, 2023, starting at 10:00 a.m. in McLellan Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, with Deacon Lorne MacNeil officiating. A reception will follow in McLellan funeral home. Your online words of comfort and expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.mclellanfuneralhome.com
