Augustus 'Gussie' Seward

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Gussie Seward on April 24, 2011 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. His loving family was by his side throughout his battle with cancer. He was the son of the late John and Margaret (Burrows) Seward of Glace Bay. He worked as a miner in his early years and then as a construction worker and was a member of the Labour Union Local 1115 until he retired. Gussie lived in Glace Bay all his life, was a quiet man who loved to read and there was always a novel or newspaper by his side. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Gertrude Mary ‘Tootsie’ (Lynk); his only daughter, Mary (Ira) Cathcart; sons, Gussie (Irene) Seward and John (Leona) Seward, as well as his grandchildren, Kathy (Chris) Murphy, Stephen Cathcart, Alex Seward, Tessa Seward and Conor Seward, and one great-grandchild, Emily Murphy, whom he loved all so dearly. He is also survived by two sisters, Marie Coleman and Martha (Herman) Vringer and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Wilfred, Anthony, Frank and John; as well as sister, Georgina Mills. In honouring Gussie’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Funeral services will held in the chapel of the McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 10 a.m. with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Donations can be made in Gussie’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or Cape Breton Regional Palliative Care Unit. To express condolences to the family, please go to www.mclellanfuneralhome.com.
