It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Andrew Jurcina, age 85, on April 13th, 2022.
Born in New Waterford on April 9th, 1937, Andrew was the son of the late Andrew Jurcina and Mary Feit.
Andrew grew up in River Ryan where he enjoyed the outdoors and playing sports such as hockey and rugby. Andrew was a relentlessly hardworking, conscientious, and loyal man from his first job as a young boy at Horyl’s Meats until his retirement from Brinks Security in 2005. He was a proud coal miner of 14 years and worked 20 years as a Security Guard for the mining company. His days in the coal mine made for lifelong friendships with his colleagues, all hard-working men with whom he supported during long hard workdays and just may have played the odd practical joke on from time to time. Andrew was also a volunteer with the local food bank and meals on wheels.
Andrew was a big strong man with an imposing physical presence under which lay the purest and most kind, gentle heart. He always had time for the little ones and knew most of the kids in the neighbourhood who always had a large grinned smile on their faces and a big “hi Andy” whenever they saw him. He would never see a traveller stranded or a school kid walk to school during bad weather and always found room for them in his “four door bus”. Andrew had a fond love for animals as well and in his last few years could be seen taking long walks with a pocket full of “dog biscuits” treating any dog he would meet along the way.
Andrew will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 63 years Joan; daughters Susan (Dan) Nightingale, Helen; sons Allan (Priscilla Reid), John (Marie); grandchildren Kyle (Stephanie Tsigoulis) Nightingale, Zachary (Sofia) Nightingale, Kristen and Kassia Jurcina, Jordan (Sarah Malley) Jurcina and Jacob Jurcina; his brothers Frank (Patsy), Joe (Frances), Angus (Doreen), Steve, John and sister Veronica, as well as many nieces and nephews and puppy friends.
Andrew was predeceased by his son Paul (at infancy), his parents Andrew and Mary and brothers William and Martin.
A Funeral Mass will be held on July 25, 2022, at 10am, in the Parish of St. Leonard, New Waterford, with Father Jim Oliver officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Army, Navy, Airforce Veterans Club (downstairs), on Wilson Avenue.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave, New Waterford, 902-862-7500.
