It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alvin Cecil O’Brien, on May 17, 2022, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in New Waterford on November 22, 1954, he was the son of the late John and Maurina (Gillis) O’Brien.
Alvin was a proud millwright with a long and successful career. He worked for DEVCO for close to 20 years and after the mines closed, he relocated to Brockville, Ontario where he was employed by Dupont. Alvin joined the Millwright Local 1410 in Kingston, working in many different locations across Ontario and retired in 2020. After retirement, he continued to share his knowledge and skill as a trainer with Local 1410 until he and Bev moved back to New Waterford in July 2021. He enjoyed golfing, riding his motorcycle, watching sports on TV and spending time with his family, especially his two grandchildren Quinlin and Aven.
Alvin is survived by his loving wife Beverly (MacCormick), son Jonathan (Jaunni), daughter Darlene (Paul) Noble, grandsons Quinlin and Aven; sisters Bernita (Paul) Milburn, Sheila O’Brien; brothers Leroy (Liz), Aubrey (Maureen), Mervin (Wanda), Aunt Mary Gillis; cousins Margie Gillis, Joanie (Shea) McInnis; many nieces, nephews and many good friends including Jeff Sands.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 24, from 11-1 pm. A chapel service will be held at 1 pm, with Deacon Lorne MacNeil officiating. Interment will be in Saint Michael’s Cemetery, followed by a reception at the KOC on Plummer Avenue.
