John Kenneth 'Jackie' Wilkie

It is with broken hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of John “Jackie” Wilkie on October 8, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by his family. Born in Sugar Loaf County, Nova Scotia, he is the son of the late Hector and Margaret (MacIntyre) Wilkie. Jack worked for 18 years in Montreal at Signode, Canada as the shipping and receiving supervisor. Jack and Shirley came back to their roots in Cape Breton in 1976. They built a home on Lingan Road, River Ryan and raised their three children. Jack worked for DEVCO at Lingan Mine for 10 years in the warehouse until he was forced to retire due to ill health. In the past few years, Jacks health has been deteriorating but he continued to live his life to the fullest. Jack loved to fish and hunt and spent many happy days down in Mabou hunting deer. Jack was a family man who loved to be with his daughter and sons. Jack looked forward to the summers when his grandsons which he adored would come home to visit poppy. Jack could always be seen working in his yard. He loved to be outdoors and his yard was always looking newly manicured. Jack loved music and he and Shirley often went dancing together. When a good old down home song played, you could see jack stamping his feet to the beat. Jack is survived by his loving wife and caregiver to whom he was married for 54 years, Shirley McNeil Wilkie. Also, survived by his son John (Yan) Wilkie, Ontario; daughter Shelley White, Ontario; and son James Wilkie, Ontario. Jack will be lovingly remembered by his two grandsons, Ryan and Tyler White and their father, Dwayne White. Survived are brother, David (Elsie) Wilkie, New Waterford; Francis (Joanne), Wilkie, Ontario; sisters, Ethel (Ron) Gaylor, Quebec; Heckey Langford, Ontario and Delores Reid, Quebec. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Jack is predeceased by his brother in-law Peter Langford. Cremation has taken place. There is no visitation. A funeral mass with be held Tuesday, October 14 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of Saint Leonard, Mount Carmel Ave., with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. There will be a luncheon to follow at the K.O.C, Plummer Ave., New Waterford. All are welcome.
