Janet Lynn Morrison

Buckle up, this is going to be a long one!

At Maple Hill Manor, or as Janet called it, ‘Hannah Melon’ on the bright, sunny fall afternoon of Monday, October 24, 2022, our beautiful earth angel, Janet Lynn Morrison, officially gained her wings as adoring family members and friends stood by her side.

Our beautiful Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, and friend was born in Glace Bay, NS on November 16, 1976 into the family of Ray & Anita (McNeil) Morrison. Janet had a lifelong affliction to Prader-Willi Syndrome, which came with many limitations. However, what she lacked in ability was more than made up for in her determination, grace, love, humour, and infectious joy… and her iPad. Fortunate was the person who got serenaded by her ‘Happy Birthday’ song. She taught her family and her communities the true meaning of these traits. Janet was an ultimate sports fan. In her time, she cheered enthusiastically for two of her nephews, Ryan and Dan of the Antigonish Bulldogs. She also loved watching the Toronto Raptors with her Dad. Above all else, she was an avid cheerleader for the BEC team, Breton Bears, in the annual Coal Bowl Classic and was aptly awarded with the Gold Star Award recognizing her as the community’s #1 fan. BEC team members, coaches, and referees always made her feel that she was part of the team, giving high fives, and gifting souvenirs. Her enthusiasm for hand-printed signs were a joy to the parents on the teams that she rooted for.

Janet had a lifelong love of animals, having had many pets over the years. She was a volunteer kitty cuddler at the SPCA. This job led to the adoption of her favourite cat, Petunia, who she quickly renamed, Tuna. Janet also took exceptional pride in the fact that her brother in law, Roddie, who owns a dairy farm, named a special Jersey cow after her. She was very proud of it, and looked upon it as her very own.

Janet attended schools in Dominion, Glace Bay and New Waterford. While in New Waterford she attended the Joy Program. Janet graduated from BEC in 1997. Following this she attended Horizon Achievement Centre for many years, up until the one day she came home informing her family “I tired (retired), I done.” Many thanks to the lovely staff and friends she made on that part of her journey.

Above all, she loved her family and friends. She is survived by her ultimate fierce protectors, her parents Ray & Anita Morrison, her siblings Jeannie Kennedy (Roddie), Greg Morrison (single/looking), Katie McLean (Jamie) and by her treasured nieces and nephews, Ryan, Dan, Kait, Bryan, Ben K, Johnathan, Riley, Ben M. and Emily and her many boyfriends. There are countless close and distant relatives who were near and dear. Special thanks to Sharon MacKenzie and Karen MacSween who accompanied and supported Janet on her final journey over the last two weeks.

To all the staff of Maple Hill Manor, we could never repay you for the genuine love and affection you gave to our girl.

Janet was predeceased by her grandparents, Roy and Olive MacNeil and Kenneth and Margaret Morrison, her Aunts Maureen and Edith, her Uncles Daniel and Harold, her best friend, Sharon Anne MacSween, and her physician, Dr. Bob O’Brien.

Janet did so much, and touched so many hearts in her short 45 years on Earth. We will forever be thankful. Profound thanks to the countless nurses, doctors, EMT’s, Home Care, and VON who contributed to the quality of Janet’s time with us.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 28, 2022 at McLellan Funeral Home, New Waterford between 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Special Child

They call my child a special child

But then, all children are

Who know the love of God and man

Who follow a separate star.

Slow to learn the lessons

Of walking, speech or math

But, quick to know that love and fear

Trace very different paths.

In degree of love they grow with ease

It is God’s own love that flows

Whether the gift is a teddy bear

Or the scent of a perfumed rose.

Ever amazed with others’ gifts

They draw out our very best

They multiply all the love we give

And to God they give the rest.

The path they follow, we cannot walk

For, we do not know the way

The signs and lights that lead them on

Are just seen by saints they say.

In our pride of being better folks

We’re fooled by our own conceits

A child like this, no battles cause

She’s my special child named, “Peace”.
