Obituary for Donald Joseph McKay

Donald Joseph McKay
River Ryan

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family announce the peaceful passing of Joey McKay, 72, on July 8, 2020 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Sydney on August 21, 1947, he was the oldest son of the late Andrew and Rita (Mahon) McKay.

Joey was a carpenter by trade and a member of the Carpenters Union Local 1588. He was also a member of the Parish of Saint Leonard.

Joey loved spending time with family, having a good laugh, and giving nicknames to anyone he cared for. He enjoyed talking politics, especially “Trump”. He was an avid reader and before google, he was the one we called for any history or geography questions. He enjoyed visiting historical landmarks, especially the Alamo. In his younger years he loved to draw and sketch, jive and play hockey. Joey enjoyed westerns and cheering on his favorite team ‘The Montreal Canadians’.

Joey is survived by his 2 children; Kimberly (Dennis) Tobin, Sibley, La., Kelly and her son Joshua, River Ryan, with whom he resided; grandchildren, Logan (Zoe), Connor; brother, Wayne (Tish); sisters, Novena Inez (Doug), Glenda (Bobby); nieces, Janelle and Melanie; nephew Chad; Aunt Sarah and several cousins.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Viola (MacPherson); his uncle Jim; aunts Clara, Violet, Gertrude, Emma, and Annie Mae.

There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place and a private Memorial Mass will be held at a later date. Donations in Joey’s memory can be made to the Cape Breton SPCA.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave, New Waterford, 902-862-7500.
