Obituary for Bernard Francis Van Doninck

Bernard Francis Van Doninck
New Waterford

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Bernard ‘Bernie’ Van Doninck on July 21, 2020, at home. Born in New Waterford on October 28, 1939, he was the son of the late Lewis and Rosella (MacDonald) Van Doninck.

Bernie was a Veteran who served on the Aircraft carrier Bonaventure. After his service in the Navy, he worked for the Cape Breton Post, and as a salesman for Scotia Wholesale. Bernie was a music lover, an accomplished saxophone player who played in several bands including Second Wind, Cape Breton Brass, as well as the Donkin Brass Band. He enjoyed camping, travelling, fishing, nature, and the outdoors. He was a great lover of animals, especially his dogs, and a top-quality wood worker. He enjoyed a good conversation with his many friends and was known for his practical jokes.

Bernie is survived by his loving wife Donna (Luedey) Van Doninck; his brother in law Bill J. (Diane) Luedey; sisters in law Judy Gillibrand, Pat Acton; his close friends Karl (Lynette) MacNeil, Matt (Deanie) Hawley, Ansie (Brenda) MacPherson, and Allan (Karen) MacNeil.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter Helene Marie and his brother Johnny.

Cremation has taken place and a chapel service will be held at a later date.

Donations in Bernie’s memory can be made to the Cape Breton SPCA.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave, New Waterford, 902-862-7500.
